Stevens County Historical Society

Internships

The Stevens County Historical Society (SCHS) is looking for interns to help throughout the year. Interns at SCHS gain valuable experience by working with museum collections as they learn about artifact care, museum exhibits, research methods, and local history. SCHS internships are flexible and allow projects to be tailored to individual interests. Proposals for additional projects and roles will also be accepted.

Any questions can be directed to the director at 320-589-1719.

Internships generally take place during regular museum hours (see bottom of this page). If you wish to earn credit for the internship, arrangements need to be made with the appropriate university faculty and staff. Internships are unpaid unless otherwise noted.

Exhibits

Exhibits interns will work directly with the curator to research, design, and create a mini-exhibit. Exhibits may be created using museum collections or outside materials. Your small exhibit should explore local themes – history, art, identity, or anything else related to Stevens County. Exhibits addressing broader themes related to Minnesota, the Midwest, or communities present in Stevens County will also be considered. Applications for this internship should also include a short proposal (1 page or less) for a potential exhibit. If accepted, proposals can be updated and do not necessarily define the project.

Education

The education intern will work directly with museum staff to research and create educational programming for a variety of ages. Programs can be related to exhibits, scouts and/or other youth programs, school groups, and other related museum events. Candidates need to have some experience with children and be comfortable speaking in front of groups.

Collections

The collections intern will work directly with the curator to inventory, process, and properly house museum collections. Duties may include labeling artifacts, photographing artifacts, artifact research/identification, assisting with exhibit installation, and other related tasks.
